A rose garden, have your ever gazed upon one? Rose trees are a treat to have in any one's garden. After a few years of working with "normal" rose bushes we decided to plant a rose tree. My Aunt Ruby was the one who introduced us to rose trees. She has a wonderful garden. Not only did she have a wide variety of rose bushes she had a rose tree garden.
There are so many types of rose trees that she didn't have two alike. Her rose tree garden was a excellent place to relax. Rose trees are basically a root stock grafted to a stem or standard and then grafted to a rose bush. The long standard is responsible for the "tree" name. The average height of a rose tree is between 3 to 6 feet and they come in multiple colors.
Now that you have selected the perfect tree for your rose tree garden you will need to prep the planting area.Always remember to properly prepare the soil. Rose bushes generally grow well during the spring. Since the "trunk" has no leaves to protect it from the sun it can get a sun burn or scalded. Add in fertilized to the soil and set up the ground the same way that is being done for other rose bushes. Always be ready with stakes since we want to make sure that the rose tree doesn't fall over. A good steak, just like on the grill, can make all the difference for a successful rose tree.
Another crucial element in your bush' survival is pruning. Your rose tree may put on a little more weight on one side due to growth. You must remove some weight from the heavier side so that the weight will be returned back to the center. Do not forget to do this for the sake of your rose tree. That really is a downer so please make sure to keep up on pruning. Always have a sharp pair of sheers or knife when you prune. Cut just above a node, or what we regular folks call a leaf union and this will ensure future growth.Winter can be cruel to rose trees so they need shelter. It is for this reason that you need to prune as much as possible.
The cane of the rose bush should not be pruned. After pruning, give it a winter blanket or move it into a pot. Cover the trunk to protect it from the cold should you decide to leave it outside. You'll need some chicken wire shaped like a cylinder and put it around the trunk of the bush. Fill this with mulch making sure you go all the way to the base of the bush. No part of the cane must be visible. This plant will require just a little more attention but is well worth the hassle. It stands out in any garden and is a favorite amongst rose enthusiasts. Always put into mind to do thorough research so that the experience that you will add from caring for your rose garden will be unforgettable.
